EXCELLENCE IN SOUND
Russell Boiarsky – Corpus Christi - Evolution Theatre Company
What an incredible year of theater projects. After wrapping up Cowgirls Don't Ride Zebras and Corpus Christi, I began composing original music for a world premiere play, Traveling, produced by Evolution Theatre, which opens in late September (9/22). Additionally, I am finalizing sound design for CATCO is Kids' production of Shakespeare & Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope, set to open later this month (8/25). Very pleased to have these opportunities to pursue what I love. Stay tuned for updates and music from the shows and more.
Been busy wrapping up composition and sound design for Evolution / CATCO's joint production of Terrence McNally's Corpus Christi, a controversial modern-day take on the story of Christ. It is a fantastically written play performed by an extremely talented cast. Preview shows (open to the public) begin this weekend, Friday/Saturday - April 28th/29th, 8pm at Columbus Performing Arts Center. The full schedule of shows runs April 4th - 13th. More at Evolution Theatre Company.
It's been a whirlwind of writing across a number of genres from bluegrass, to glam rock, hip hop, orchestral, and funk, and I'm very excited for the opening performance of Cowgirls Don't Ride Zebras tomorrow night at the Columbus Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm. The show will run through March 12th.
Tickets can be purchased through Catco is Kids.
Copies of the book, Cowgirls Don't Ride Zebras, written and illustrated by Chris Leyva can be purchased on Amazon.
And last but not least, the play is already generating some great press. Check out this article from the Columbus Dispatch.
A new year brings new shows. I'm currently composing music for the world premiere of Cowgirls Don't Ride Zebras, a wonderful kids play written by a friend and local Columbus playwright, Chris Leyva. Following that show I'll be immediately launching into composing for a production of Terrence McNally's Corpus Christi. It's a busy busy start to an exciting year. Stay tuned for show details.
I'm very proud to be working on a second production with CATCO this year, The Kabuki Sleeping Beauty. This production has certainly taken me on a journey and pushed my musical comfort zone. I've come to appreciate the care and deliberacy of Kabuki music and the simplistic instrumentation with which it is crafted. Hoping my take on it will do it justice. As always, it is a pleasure to be working with Director, Joe Bishara and especially on one of Playwright, Steven Anderson's personal favorites. Check out a sneak peak below and don't miss the show opening next week (May 13th).
I've shared several of my original compositions from CATCO's production of Mothers and Sons. Take a listen...
CATCO's Mothers and Sons opened this past week to standing ovations and several strong reviews including the following from Columbus Dispatch and ColumbusUnderground.com. Very pleased to have been a part of this production and to see it off to strong start.
Feeling very blessed to have received Central Ohio Theater Roundtable's Excellence in Sound Design award for the second year in a row. Very appreciative of those who continue to support my work.

Couldn't be more excited to announce the official pre-release of my new album Sevens! This started off as a simple project, as I suppose as they all do, with the goal of just tracking a few new songs, but it became so much more. It is currently available for pre-order at my Online Store.
I will be sharing tracks and samples soon!
Today time moves slower, passion takes focus, and life is put into perspective. I'm making my way to the West Coast (Portland once again) to put the finishing touches on my new album Sevens. From there I'll head south to Palomar Mountain for a week-long film scoring workshop. Very excited (and thankful to my wife and family) to be able to put things on pause long enough to get immersed in music for a few weeks.
It's been quite a while, just over 5 years to be exact, since Turn released. Definitely time for something new. After several months in the studio and lots of tracking, I'm excited to have all material for my new album recorded and sent off to Jordan Richter (mixing engineer for Turn) in Portland. Keep an eye out... I'm looking to release the album later this summer. Very happy to be sharing some new material.
